CHILD ABUSE

“Prosperity and mobility in Asia mean that men wants to have sex with children,” said Readers Digest in its September 2007 about the prevailing child sex slave in Asia . This shameful act is one of the many cases of child abuse that now graces the world.
Child abuse is a deliberate act performed by an adult that results physical or emotion harm to the child. The word “abuse” is multifaceted word, which include actual physical beating by parents to their children or neglecting a child’s need. There are several different types of child abuse, and some children experience more than one form.
Physical abuse includes embracing of violent measures that can harm or kill a child. Evidence of physical abuse include unexplained bruises, broken bones, or burns.
Sexual abuse on the other hand, happens when an adult takes sexual gratification over a child. Sexual abuse may also take place when a child is exposed to sexual activities. It may begin with kissing or petting and end up with more aggressive sexual work, like oral sex, vaginal and anal penetration.
Emotional abuse hampers a child’s self respect. It usually includes repeated verbal cruelty and calling the child words, shouting, or criticizing. Other types of emotional abuse are incarcerating a child inside a dark room or closet and denying him from socializing and making friend.

TERRORISM

The September 11, 2001-bombing of World Trade Center in New York , USA was synonymous to the threat of terrorism that have become a major force in the world affair ever since. Terrorism is a purposeful making and use of fear to bring up change in the society or a government. Terrorism uses violence and is usually committed by anti-government groups or individuals.
Terrorism has been spoken again and again in the annals of world history. During the French revolution, terrorism was used to describe a new system of government. The Reign of Terror (1789-1799), was planned to promote liberty but instead terrorized the populace, ending thousands dead. However, terrorism gained its present day popularity during the Russian Revolution (1918), where revolutionaries to describe their violent resistance against the oppressive czarist rule. From that time on to the present, more and more are struggling from terrorist activities the world wide. Here and there, killings occur: around a million-people died during the rule of Khmer Rouge in Cambodia ; about 800,000 in Rwanda are left dead since 1990.
Yet, people today seemed as if history has not taught them the lesson. On a regular basis, terrorist attacks have left hundreds killed, thousands crippled, and millions robbed of peace of mind and safety. Despite the efforts of the world to stop this act, this sadistic practice does not stop here.

POVERTY

Regardless of the terminology used, developed, industrialized, and economically sufficient countries continue to both of their sky-rocketing standard of living, while those less or almost unindustrialized countries continue to falter to poverty and are left poorer and poorer every year.
Simply talking, poverty in the lack of basic needs of an individual, such as deprivation of nutritious food, clothing, decent home, safe water, and social services. Intense poverty can cause massive death, hunger, and malnutrition to the afflicted ones. These poor people - especially those from Africa, Latin America, and Asia - struggle to for their daily meals and necessities. Rich countries are also victims of poverty. Those poor people, especially living in squatter’s area in urban areas also suffer malnutrition, and illness, not withstanding illegal drug dependency and being involved in crimes, like robbery and kidnapping.
Poverty is all through the history of mankind and its causes are very simple. Some experts said that the world has too many people yet jobs are insufficient and wealth is unfairly distributed. Poor people in developing countries often work for low wages in factories set up by companies based in developed countries (Encarta, 2003). Here in the Philippines , for example, 40 percent of the country’s total income goes only to ten percent of the population, mostly member of the elite class. Statistics also shows that 70 percent of the population live below the poverty line and earn less than the daily minimum wage.
Nevertheless, these causes are multifarious and cannot be easily erased. On the other hand, some say that the cause and effect of poverty interact with the people so that they themselves make the factors that in the end directly come back to them. These factors, which are considered to the main causes, are: (1) overpopulation, (2) unequal distribution of wealth, (3) inability to meet the high standard of living, (4) insufficient education and lack of job opportunities, (5) environmental ruin, (6) certain fiscal and demographic trend, (6) and welfare inducement.

CORRUPTION

A former president now in prison for stealing from the national coffer and accepting gambling payback which was worth almost a billion peso; an administration on the rocks because of high government officials allegedly involved in a scandal over a certain Chinese company. Without a doubt, corruption is omnipresent in our society.
Encarta Encyclopedia discussed that corruption is a “wrongdoing” done by people entrusted in a certain position, whether be it elected or appointed, in public or private office. This term is a common adjective applied to those people who benefits themselves while in the post. Here in the Philippines , these people are called buwaya since they used to stash up as much money as they can while they are holding their power and influence. What is worse is that corruption deprives people, especially the ordinary mass, of a better life. Instead of using the money for building schools and infrastructure, improving education, health, and other social services, what happens to the money entrusted to them is ending up in the fat and hidden bank accounts under cryptic and non-existent names.

Living in Roxas City for the past 20 years may seem long enough for me to understand it. Yes, indeed it is a small place and you can travel it from border to border in just a day. But what is dominant in this small city? People here are peace lovers. Yes, there maybe problems here and there but all in all, the people here are contented in the way they live. Time may pass by and it may seem that development is still slowly getting up to its heels, not to mention the growing number of the citizens who inhabit this city. With that in mind, we might consider the things that we usually see daily that has never been carried out to be developed. That is the traffic condition.

We are very much aware of the different problems that involve the traffic situations that we encounter. From the oil price hike to the rollback, accompanied by the roller coaster ride of our fare rates, to the different colored, unidentified vehicles monitored by our traffic enforcers; these are the usual problems that we encounter daily. But, have we ever thought of the rise in the number of vehicles that cross the streets of Roxas? Almost every year, the Roxas City government releases new set of city numbers for the tricycles and registers new vehicles from two-wheels and above, including the newly established city taxis that roam the city. Indeed, we are increasing the number of vehicles that occupies the street but our streets are still in the same width. As a result, we are stuck in heavy traffic in key areas of the city during rush hours. I think it is time for us to consider some arrangements that could help our current traffic conditions.

As a student, it is vital for me to be early enough to avoid lock-ups in traffic. Having our major roads in “one-way” has indeed helped me pass through heavy traffic since my high school days, a time when the fare rate was just P3.00. I think it is time for the city to have our own traffic lights. There are a number of positive outcomes that could help all the people in Roxas City whenever it will be approved. One of which is that it could minimize the duties of our traffic officers in areas where it is always having major traffic problems. It could help them carry on with their other duties such as keeping traffic violators from doing mischief and watching-over those drivers from traveling without registering their vehicles first. It could also prevent drivers from complaining to traffic enforcers in the way they control the traffic.

If there might be a problem for this to be of possibility, one thing that I myself could see is that the drivers will have a hard time adjusting to the traffic lights. But in any case, it will still be just a minor hitch. It’s just a case of getting a little used to it. For sure, it will be properly discussed to the drivers before having it constructed. Well, it’s not going to be like every road here in Roxas will be having these traffic lights, but to major highways that have four-way roads or crossroads. For example, in places where there are too many students or hospitals, like in Fuentes Drive , the city plaza, corner Hughes Street and Burgos Street or such places in which heavy traffic is observed.
In life we must adjust ourselves in the never-ending process of development. We don’t have to look if who are those above or below us. We just need to keep up with the changes that we meet. Today it’s still a dream; tomorrow it will be green, yellow, and red.

GLOBAL WARMING

The ever increasing water level, continuous weather disturbances, and the fast-paced melting of the ice caps in the Polar Regions are just of the well-known effects of global warming. Indeed, this unconventional phenomenon in the environment and the past pace rise of the temperature are detrimental to the existence of every organism on the planet, including mankind.

The word global warming itself tells its meaning. It is the rise of the earth’s average temperature in the atmosphere, bodies of water, and landmasses. According to Encarta Encyclopedia (2003), “The planet has warmed (and cooled) many times during the 4.65 billion years of its history.”

Eugene P. Odum and Garry W. Barrett (2006) discussed that “before 1850, the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has increased more than 370 parts per million (ppm),” prompting for the rise of greenhouse effect and subsequent global warming. Since 1860, according to Odum and Barrett, the average rise of temperature rose to an astounding 0.50 Celsius by 2005.

Among the main cause of global warming is believed to be burning of fossil fuels, such as coal and natural gas, which emits carbon dioxide aside from other substance known as greenhouse gases. Since these gases fill the atmosphere, they serve as insulator and traps heat with should have gone out to the outer space.

Odum and Barrett further discussed that, “there is now an ample evidence to evaluate the ecological impact to marine environments,” which have caused significant pattern in the ecosystem from the polar terrestrial to marine environment.

Butterflies are one of the most amazing creatures made by God. Indeed, to look at them as they spread their wings and fly is a joy for us humans. A lot of people are interested in butterflies. They thrive beauty - in places where there are flowers and plants which can serve as their host and food.

It is a pride for us Capiceños to have a lovely butterfly garden where butterflies of many kinds live and thrive. Weny’s Butterfly Garden is a fine place for you to have a retreat, unwind, and take a look at butterflies.

Weny’s Garden is situated at Brgy. Bonga, Panay, Capiz, some twenty minutes away from Roxas City . To go to the place will offer you an extravaganza of sites that are worth taking a look at. Before reaching Panay, you will pass through the Tadiao Bridge , the site of the first battle between the Spanish and the Capiceño troops after Gen. Esteban Contreras declared revolt against Spain . When you reach the town proper, you will pass through Calle Revolucion, considered as the second oldest street in the Philippines , and before taking a change of route, be dazzled by the imposing structure of the Parish of Sta. Monica, home to Southeast Asia ’s biggest churchbell. Across the church is the main street that serves as the avenue. Taking the second street on the left side will lead you to Weny’s Garden.

The Garden is half-a-hectare wide. Any visitor who comes there will be welcomed with an open arm by its owner, Wenceslao “Weny” Dimo-os. He is a retired banker whose passion for plants made him decide to establish the garden. The butterfly house, the place’s main attraction, was added two years ago.

The garden is filled with all sorts of plants – flowering and non-flowering, shade-loving and sun-loving, ornamental, edible, or herbal.

Before letting guests to roam around, Mr. Dimo-os always give his guests a backdrop about what butterflies are, their life cycle, their habitat, and their lifespan. Notable in his mini-lecture are facts that a single butterfly may cost P180.00 a piece; that a butterfly may live for two weeks but 20 minutes after coming from its coccoon , it is ready for mating, and that the garden is home to two dozen species of butterfly.

Once his mini-lecture is over, guest are allowed to freely wander in the garden. The butterfly house is the first must-see area. And as guest go there, they will not miss passing along the L-shaped pathwalk filled with millionaire’s vine. That spot is really cool and perfect for picture taking.

The butterfly house is about 100 sq m. Both children and adults will be really awed at the number and variety of butterflies. The garden is not only home to butterflies, mind you. At the other side, guests can mingle with guinea pigs, white mice, dwarf hamsters, turtles, iguanas, love birds, and gold fishes. Rusty, the little poodle, will likewise amaze you.

The garden is all-organic. Mr. Dimo-os does not use artificial fertilizers. Instead, he has a compost pit where dried leaves are left to become humus which he uses as soil for the plants.

POEM

There were night that i cry
There were day that i smile
There were time that i cant deny
My feelings to the guy, that i LOVE like you.

You are the one that beat my heart fast
I cant forget you because i dream you at night
You are the guy inside my mind
I believe that age doesn't matter
And i believed that poor is not accept if LOVE is the topic

Somebody say that we will not meant for each other
